Week Two:
Flamingo Beach
After a week in Monteverde, I was picked up by pre-arranged transportation on Sunday morning, at the house of my host family, to begin the very bumpy and rough drive down the mountains to my next location in Costa Rica. Four hours later, at about 1:00 in the afternoon, I arrived in the town of Brasilito. After finding the house of my host family, which was just a short drive from the school in Flamingo, I met up with another student I knew and we got lunch at a restaurant right down the street. It literally was on the beach. It was hard to believe that we had our feet in the sand in Costa Rica, were looking out across the ocean, and that this was going to be our lives for the next two weeks! During my first week, I spent my time attempting to adjust to the unbelievably hot temperatures of the coast. I also was able to go on a boat tour, participate in a dance class and a cooking class at the school, try food at lots of new restaurants, go on a day trip which included zip lining, rafting, rock climbing, and horseback riding, in addition to learning a lot of Spanish!
My host family:
My second host family was much bigger and busier than my first! It took me a little while to adjust to the change of scenery, but I ended up liking them a lot! However, they talked so much faster than my previous mom, so that was a big challenge for me. I decided that one of my goals for the week would be to try to catch on to their much faster speaking, so I spent a lot of time just sitting, listening and trying to figure out what they were saying. One of my favorite times during the two weeks I was with this family though, was when the kids invited me to play Jenga with them. We even played a version where you had to spin around in circles before you took your piece out, and it was a lot of fun!
